STRATFORD, Conn. — Stratford Mayor John Harkins staged a news conference Monday to criticize the Town Council's opposition to razing the decommissioned Center School building, according to the Connecticut Post.

As previously reported, Harkins wants the building to be razed in favor of a transit-oriented development with a parking garage, shops and apartments, while the Town Council wants the school reopened.

Harkins said that the transit-oriented development is needed for parking, housing and property tax income, and that the Center School property is small and "functionally obsolete," the Connecticut Post reported.

Chairwoman Beth Daponte of District 1 said that a successor for resigned District 2 Councilman Mark Dumas may be needed for the matter to be resolved, said the Connecticut Post.
